Born in the Bronx, played football at Michigan State, and for several years a rodeo rider nicknamed “the Jewish cowboy,” James Caan was one of the most exciting and rugged stars to emerge in the sixties. He was photographed by Jack Robinson on October 25, 1971 for a Vogue “People Are Talking About …” feature. Caan is described as the “unexploded star of the movie version of The Godfather (1972)” and “a real comer who has yet to play a film role that needs his kind of acting muscle”. Caan had made his debut as a sailor in Irma la Douce (1963), and he impressed audiences as John Wayne’s sidekick in El Dorado (1967). His heart-breaking performance on television in Brian’s Song (1971) confirmed his star status.
