Lauren Bacall in her apartment at The Dakota, New York, 1970

Lauren Bacall was born Betty Joan Perske in New York. As a young model on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar in 1944, she was whisked to California to co-star with Humphrey Bogart in To Have and Have Not. They married and she made three more films with him in succession, The Big Sleep (1946), Dark Passage (1947), and Key Largo (1948). Bogart died in 1957 yet Bacall went on to become one of Hollywood’s most durable stars. When Jack Robinson photographed her in her Manhattan apartment in the Dakota on March 20, 1970, Bacall was about to open on Broadway in the lead role in Applause, the musical based on the film All About Eve, and for which she would win a Tony.
