Michael Caine, Close-up, 1966

Bespectacled, durable British star Michael Caine was born as Maurice Micklewhite in the Elephant and Castle district of London. Drafted into the army, he saw action in Korea, and then worked in repertory, the British equivalent of stock theater. Jack Robinson photographed Caine in his suite at the Plaza Hotel. The article published in the “Men in Vogue” feature of the magazine on April 1, 1967, mentions his latest success in Funeral in Berlin (1966), Gambit (1966), and Hurry Sundown (1967), and comments that his “deceptively casual” manner is hidden behind slightly tinted lenses. Just nine days after publication of this article, the 1967 Academy Awards ceremony was held which honored Caine’s role in Alfie (1966) with a best actor nomination, the first of his six nominations.
