The conceptual artist Solomon “Sol” LeWitt is shown here in his studio on the Lower East Side of New York. LeWitt was one of the early proponents of minimal and conceptual art, and his works ranged from simple two-dimensional modular designs on paper to massive sculptures based on the cube. He was photographed on August 21, 1969 for a “People Are Talking About …” feature of Vogue. LeWitt is described as an “artist more interested in the idea than the work.” “Brainy, with an air of sweet fatality, LeWitt has taken art down from preciousness: ‘Nothing lasts – not even art or us.’” Over his life, LeWitt was the subject of hundreds of gallery and museum shows including major retrospectives organized by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
