Jerry Orbach, 1968

Born in the Bronx, Jerry Orbach was a stalwart of Broadway, particularly musicals such as the 1955 revival of The Threepenny Opera, Carnival! (1961), and the long running hits Chicago (1975), and 42nd Street (1980). He also appeared in films and on television in Law and Order. This photograph was taken by Jack Robinson on July 9, 1968. Later that year, Orbach would open on Broadway in Promises, Promises, a role for which he would win two Tony awards. When he died of prostate cancer in 2004, Broadway dimmed its lights in his honor, and the Hells’ Kitchen intersection of 8th Avenue and 53rd Street was later named after him.
