Canadian actor Donald Sutherland grew up in New Brunswick, worked as a teenage radio reporter for a Nova Scotia station, graduated with a double major in engineering and drama at the University of Toronto, and then studied acting in London. His career break came as a proto-hippie soldier in The Dirty Dozen (1967). He was photographed by Jack Robinson on January 30, 1970 for a “People Are Talking About …” feature of Vogue, where the thirty-four year old Sutherland was described as “tall, with gooseberry pale eyes.” At the time he was photographed, Robert Altman’s M*A*S*H (1970) was just about to be released, and Sutherland’s role had “dug him out of obscurity into a blaze.” “A man of wit and brain who damps his flash with deprecation, speaks softly . . . comedy overtakes him like a synaptic reflex.”
