Edna O'Brien, 1970

The gifted Irish novelist Edna O’Brien published her first book, The Country Girls, in 1960. This was the first of a trilogy that also included The Lonely Girl and Girls in Their Married Bliss. Authorities in Ireland disliked the sexual attitudes portrayed, and suppressed them. Jack Robinson photographed O’Brien on December 10, 1970, the year her novel A Pagan Place was published. Vogue noted her “hair like an uncontained fire” and her “verdant, acute, and pervasive sense of country.”
