Daniel Barenboim, Jacqueline DuPre & Pinchas Zukerman, 1969

Pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim, his wife the British cellist Jacqueline Du Pré, and violinist Pinchas Zukerman are photographed here by Jack Robinson on November 24, 1969. In a Vogue magazine feature “People Are Talking About ...” published February 15, 1970 under the headline, “Super Trio – Super Brio”, Vogue noted that “in rehearsal they call each other Pinky, Smiley and Danny as they bicker and laugh.” Both Barenboim and Zuckerman’s careers would flourish as both performers and conductors. Sadly however, Du Pré’s musicianship began to decline in 1971, and in 1973 she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, the disease which ultimately caused her death in 1987. Of Du Pré, the article notes, “she is an English girl who seductively embraces her Stradivarius as she bows a flawlessly burnished sound”. One critic wrote: ‘I lust for her’”.
