Zubin Mehta, 1969

The conductor Zubin Mehta was born in Mumbai, India and studied in Vienna where he made his conducting debut. When photographed on December 15, 1969, the thirty-three year old Mehta was music director of the Los Angeles Symphony and advisor to the Israeli Philharmonic. He would go on to be Music Director and Principal Conductor of the New York Philharmonic and Music Director of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. In a Vogue feature about nine young conductors, Mehta was described as “passionate, magical, and driving” and quoted that “music is written with a microscope, great music is not square.” Over the years, Mehta has received numerous awards including the Kennedy Center Honors in 2006.
