Dennis Hopper came from Dodge City, Kansas and in his early days appeared in teleplays. Some of his first notable roles were in two James Dean films, Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and Giant (1956). These photographs were taken on December 14, 1967 for a “Vogue’s Own Boutique” feature, under the title, “Dennis Hopper is sharp as photographer, as actor, and as dresser – wow!” Here he’s wearing the jacket his wife Brooke Hayward had tailored for him in London. Just eighteen months later, Hopper’s watershed moment would come with the release of the road-movie cult classic Easy Rider (1969), an anthem for youth rebellion, which he wrote, directed, and appeared in with Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson.
